Apple's chatbot will be able to search the web, generate content like images, help with coding, summarize information, and analyze uploaded files.

This is a genuine sea change. Siri has operated on card-style interactions and simple voice commands since 2011. Campos replaces that entire model with something that can hold a real conversation, remember context, and act across your apps.

How Siri Chatbot Works Differently Than Today's Siri

Right now, you ask Siri a question and get an answer. The conversation ends there.

With iOS 27, Apple will change the way Siri works. Right now, Siri can answer basic questions and complete simple tasks, but you cannot engage it in a back and forth conversation, get help with multi-step tasks, or ask complicated questions.

Based on current Siri chatbot rumors, Siri will be able to do all of that and more with the upcoming upgrade, and it will work like competing chatbots.

Apple does not currently grant existing chatbots this level of system access. That is the key differentiator. Siri will live at the operating system level, not inside a separate app.

Onscreen Awareness Gives Siri Eyes

One of the most anticipated new capabilities is the ability for Siri to understand what is currently on your screen.

Apple is expecting the Apple Intelligence version of Siri that includes personal context with support for new, deeper search capabilities, onscreen awareness so Siri can answer questions about what you are looking at, and the ability to do more in and between apps.

Think about what that means in practice. You see a restaurant in Safari, ask Siri to add it to your calendar, and it pulls the address, hours, and location automatically. No copying. No switching apps. Just a conversation.

Siri Gets Deeply Embedded in Apple's Core Apps

Siri will integrate into all Apple apps, including Photos, Mail, Messages, Music, and TV, allowing deeper hooks into the entire ecosystem. Users will be able to ask for specific images and edit them on the fly, draft emails from calendar plans, or tweak system settings via natural language.

Beyond a standalone Siri chatbot, Apple already operates a platform that could host conversational AI: the Messages app. Instead of requiring users to open a separate application, AI conversations could appear directly within Messages.

The Google Gemini Partnership Explained

Apple's AI ambition needed a foundation it could not yet build alone. So it partnered with Google.

Apple and Google entered into a multi-year collaboration under which the next generation of Apple Foundation Models will be based on Google's Gemini models and cloud technology. The custom model is comparable to Gemini 3, and it will be significantly more capable than the model behind Apple's upcoming iOS 26.4 features.

Apple, the company that built its brand on vertical integration and privacy-first computing, is licensing the intelligence layer of its most important product from Google, its oldest search rival. The privacy architecture remains Apple's justification for the arrangement.

On-device processing via Private Cloud Compute insulates user data from Google's servers, and Apple is reportedly maintaining strict control over how Gemini-generated responses are delivered.

Apple is essentially using Google's brain but applying Apple's privacy framework around it. The data stays protected. The intelligence gets a major upgrade.

In the future, Apple will be able to transition Siri to a different underlying model, so when the company does have in-house LLMs powerful enough to compete with ChatGPT or Gemini, it can move away from Google.

This is a strategic bridge, not a permanent surrender.

iOS 27 Performance and System-Level Improvements

iOS 27 is not just built for the phones Apple sells today.

iOS 27 prepares the operating system for Apple's first foldable iPhone scheduled to launch in September 2026. The device is expected to feature a 7.8-inch inner display and a 5.5-inch outer display. When unfolded, the device will present an iPad-sized screen running a version of iOS optimized for larger displays.

The foldable device will introduce multitasking capabilities on iPhone by supporting two apps side-by-side for the first time on the platform. Apple is developing new layouts for its own applications to adapt to the larger display, and third-party developers will be able to adopt those layouts.

The Siri chatbot and foldable display are designed to work together. A larger canvas for a more capable AI makes perfect sense.
